We enjoyed another long weekend camping over Memorial Day. We headed to Inks Lake, and we were able to secure a lake-side camp site 5 months ago. Our friends who were planning to join us were unable to, but then we were able to transfer their reservation to another family the week before. Despite persistent rain for the last 2 months, we were able to make it all happen! We had a great time.
We got the car all loaded and Ryan finished up work, so we left about 4pm. About 5:30pm, we stopped for fast food and got caught in a serious thunderstorm. We plowed on, but our friends decided to head home and try again the next morning. By the time we arrived, the rain was only a drizzle, and Ryan and I set up the tent. As the rain tapered off entirely, Collin and Brennan helped toss all the tent things (sleeping bags, cots, mats, clothes) inside. We didn't get anything extra done before another downpour started, so we zipped in for the night at 8 o'clock and hoped for the best. In reality, it only rained a bit longer and we were snug and dry in the tent.
Saturday morning we finished setting up camp (food, table cover, etc) and then headed to Longhorn Caverns nearby. We had booked a tour for that morning, and our friends were able to make it back. It was AMAZING! With all the rain, it was very wet and muddy, but it was really neat to see all the cool rock formations.
After our tour, we headed back to the campground. Our friends got all set up, and we had lunch. The afternoon continued with jet skiing, paddleboards, kayaking, tubes and tubing, fishing and kneeboarding. The kids got along pretty well, and the weather was perfect.
Sunday morning was a bit confusing. We had a short Come Follow Me lesson, and then we planned to hike to a swimming hole. But our friends didn't want to swim on Sunday, so they went fishing while we let our kids get in the water at our campsite. As we ate lunch, they packed up their site and then we did our walk to the swimming hole. Unfortunately, by this time the parking lot was entirely full and the swimming hole was packed. It wasn't nearly as nice as I think it would have been earlier. Oh well.
We headed back to our campsite and started the big packing up. Monday morning we had some drizzle as we were loading, but it was fine. Whew.
We had a great time! We plan to return next Memorial Day weekend. Such a pretty place!
