THE STORY
My parents came on Friday the 21st. My aunt and cousin stayed that night too on their way to Utah for her to start her first year at BYU. On Saturday, Ryan and I went to a friend's birthday party in the evening. The theme was Minute-to-Win-It games, and we were team Big Red. We both wore red t-shirts, and Ryan stuffed a playground ball under his. It was super fun, and we got last place. Ha ha.
After all the drama
On Sunday, my parents took the boys to our now "old" ward, and Ryan and I attended a different stake's conference, by way of geographical assignment. We learned that a new stake was being formed, and our neighborhood was being reassigned to a new stake and ward. Perfect timing to have a new bishop, relief society president and no visiting teachers. Not.

Weight: 7 lbs, 7 oz
Monday was Collin's first day of school. I walked him over alone, since my parents could keep Brennan and Ethan, and I think he was a little nervous. He did great. He is super tired and hungry each day when he gets home, but I think we may survive this transition... maybe.

Proud Daddy
I could never do natural labors without this super man. He is amazing!
Tuesday I had a routine ob appointment. I was 39-1/2 weeks, and I asked to have my membranes stripped. I was dilated to 3 cm, 70% effaced and at -2 station. I had had this done with Ethan too, and I told the midwife. The rest of the day I had a light period with heavy cramping. She never mentioned these side effects, but I guess she thought I knew because I had had it done before. I didn't. In fact, I cramped the rest of the week. It was absolutely horrible.

Love the tongue. Ready to tease her brothers back already!
After my appointment, my mom and I went together to get mani/pedis, which was really fun. We also vacuumed out my filthy van and got it washed. All while I cramped. :-(

On Wednesday we took the kids to a park in the morning, and I mostly tried to nap and take it easy.
My favorite position to cuddle my newborns. Those sweet open lips make me melt.
Thursday morning I woke up at 3 am with lower back pain every 10 minutes. This is how all my other labors started, and since Brennan came so quickly afterwards, I woke up Ryan at 5 am and told him we were having a baby. He took a shower, but by 6:30 am the back pain wasn't getting any more often or more painful, and I fell asleep. I went ahead and sent him off to work at 8 am. I had a few more painful contractions throughout the day, but they were spaced sometimes hours apart. We went to the library. I was so uncomfortable ALL day long, but I still met my friends for book club that evening and stayed out until after 10 pm. Whatever. Life goes on, right?

Happy Mommy
Friday morning I woke up at 3 am with lower back pain every 10 minutes AGAIN. I was so fed up and exhausted with it all by 5:30 am that we decided we'd go to the hospital no matter what and just see what happened. I was basically having constant lower back pain, but only a couple of abdominal contractions. We arrived at the hospital about 8 am, and the nurse checked me at 8:30 am - I had made NO change since Tuesday's appointment. I was so frustrated. They said they couldn't admit me, but that they would let me walk the halls for two hours. If I didn't make any change in those two hours, they would send me home. And that was that.

She's a sucker. Loved her fingers and a pacifier - despite the nurses' objections - right from the beginning
I was devastated. I KNEW I was in labor and that Brennan came so super fast after just back labor, but they wouldn't count my back labor as real labor. They said I need to get the baby to move into position in order for the pain to make any affect on my progress. They told me to take some Tylenol and use a hot pad. I was not happy.

Anyway, Ryan and I walked the halls of Mother & Baby for two hours. Nothing seemed to really change. I was still miserable, my back was still killing me, and now I had to face going home and having no idea when to come back.
Because she used her fingers to self-soothe, I kept her unswaddled in the hospital.
Unfortunately, her face got pretty scratched up from it.
At 10:30 the midwife checked me again. I was crying because I knew nothing had changed. She prodded around and in utter disbelief declared me dilated to 6 cm, 90% effaced and baby at 0 station. Yeah, she wasn't the only surprised one! The nurse finally admitted my back labor counted as real contractions, and they took my blood, got me admitted, set my IV, and started treating me like a real patient.

The only brother brave enough to hold the baby when they came to visit the hospital on Saturday.
They look so angelic.
Of course by the time they got all these chores done, labor was in full swing. When they quit messing with me, I sat on the birthing ball and Ryan applied pressure to my lower back with each contraction. Still only a few of them were in my abdomen

My "not-even 2-year-old, but already a big brother"
We're in trouble!
At 12:30, my midwife checked me again. I was now dilated 8 cm, and we decided to have my water broken. Ohhh baby!!! I hate this last part. My contractions were on top of each other. Ryan tried his best to help with my back pain, but it was intense. I felt the urge to push after only three contractions on the ball.
First bath. They don't bathe the babies here until they are 24 hours old. She smelled like a cow pasture until then.
With me back in the bed, the room filled with people. I was checked and declared 9 cm. After that, it was all leg holding and screaming and pushing and pain and craziness. I was never checked at 10 cm. That's what happened with Brennan too; it's all so chaotic because my babies came so crazy fast, and no one ever listens to me.
And here's our little tomato ready to come home. We left after 24 hours because they don't have a nursery at the hospital and don't give the mother ANY help. I figured my mom and Ryan would be better than that at home, and I was right!

And Baby Katelyn was born at 1:38 pm. Three hours from the medical community finally admitted I was in labor until she was in my arms. I can't imagine if they had sent us home. We never would have made it back to the hospital in time.

My oldest boys with the pink cake they made with Grandma. Happy "birth"day, Katelyn!
Anyway, she's here and perfect and beautiful in every way! And I had my natural, un-medicated, un-induced labor on my due date. Now I call that wonderful.

1st Grade

We've got a full-day schooler around here - the big first grade!

I also packed my --- sniff, sniff --- first school lunch this morning. I'm a real mom now.

Here's my big first grader this morning.

Isn't he adorable? I love this helper man. I'm not sure who's going to help me with all the chores around the house all day.
Side note: I'm due on Friday, and check out our photo bomber.
He'll be gone 8-3:30 every day! Ahhh!

He was so excited. I'm glad he didn't inherit my first-day-of-school anxiety.

Here's to a great year of first grade!

Bedrooms

We have had quite the upheaval in this past year with bedrooms. In Illinois, Ethan had his own room, and Collin and Brennan were next door in a bunk bed, and it worked rather well. In the rental house, Ethan had his own room again, and Collin and Brennan were next door in the bunk bed, and it was disastrous. When we bought our house two months later, we put Ethan in his own room, Brennan in the guest bed next door (which had purple walls, his favorite color), and Collin two floors below in the basement in the bunk bed alone. It worked, but I hated having Collin so far away. In fact, this winter while so many nights were interrupted by someone throwing up, Collin and Ryan slept with walkie-talkies so we could go down and help him get cleaned up if/when he got sick. In March, we moved Brennan downstairs to join Collin in the bunk bed, and the guest room remained empty upstairs. Then over 4th of July weekend, we did another major switch. We moved the bunk bed up from the basement, and Collin and Brennan joined Ethan - still in his crib - in his room upstairs. We moved the guest bed to the basement and began the process of revamping the upstairs purple room into a little girl nursery. Want to see the results?

Girl Nursery Bedroom
So the room was already painted a deep plum purple from the previous owners, and Ryan was not interested in repainting it, especially since we are having a girl. I've been really into gray and white as accent colors in the rest of the house, and I thought they'd look nice with the plum walls.

I decided that with just gray and white the room would be a little boring, so I looked around on Pinterest and fell in love with turquoise as an accent color. I thought it would be fun to have just a few pops of that color to off-set the neutral gray and white.

One trip to Hobby Lobby solidified my decisions. I found those adorable puff balls to hang from the ceiling, as well as all the gray chevron art work for above the crib. The plan is to add her first initial inside the open-frame centered above the crib, but we just barely settled on Katelyn, and Ryan is very picky about font selection. I'll get around to it sometime.

Now Baby Girl's crib deserves a section of its own. Since Baby Girl and Ethan are going to be about 22 months apart, I was concerned about having him out of our cherry crib in time for her to move into it. Then Ryan pointed out that the dark purple walls would look pretty bad with dark wood anyway, and we decided that if we found a cheap white crib, we'd grab it. We were garage-sale-ing in May, and someone was selling their white crib for only $40. We figured next Spring we could sell our cherry crib and its matching changing table - when E is done with it - for at least that and break even, so we decided to buy it. Unfortunately, we were running short on time (Collin had a soccer game starting soon), so we paid, grabbed the pieces and hurried off. We put the crib in the garage that afternoon, and mostly forgot about it. Fast forward to six weeks later - We were finally ready to touch up the chewed edges and set it up... And we discovered we were missing both of the side walls! Somehow we had only brought home the front and back walls. Stupid. We didn't totally know which house we'd bought it from and certainly not who the people were, but we figured it was worth a try to attempt to find them. I tried to get Ryan to go drive around knocking doors in the neighborhood we remember buying it in, but he said my big belly looked far more desperate. True fact. The first door I knocked on was a rude lady, and I almost lost my courage. Then I found another house I thought was the right one, but when I knocked on the door, no one answered. Finding a scrap of paper in the back seat, I scrawled a pathetic note and left my name, phone number and confession. Three days passed with no answer... And then I got a message: They had found the other two crib walls buried in their basement and we could come pick them up! Hallelujah! And thus our baby girl got her white crib. Whew.

Baby Girl's dresser has its own story too. When we first got married, we bought a cherry dresser for ourselves. We didn't have the money for a matching bedroom set until I was pregnant with Brennan, at which time we moved our dresser into the toddler room. It's been Collin's and/or Brennan's ever since. When we realized we wanted all three boys in one room, we also realized that a horizontal dresser wouldn't fit and that we'd need a vertical one instead. I really wanted a white horizontal dresser - so it could double as a changing table - for the Baby Girl's room, so Ryan suggested we spray paint our old one. I was doubtful, but it turned out perfect. He also sprayed a cherry mirror we already owned to turn it white too. The finish is great, and it looks really nice. And it only cost us the price of a few cans of spray paint. Score!

And there you have it, our little girl's purple, gray, white and turquoise nursery. I seriously have had so much fun picking everything out and putting it together.

Three Boys in One Room
Now this room is far more about functionality than looking cute. We have several different wood finishes mixed together, and it is quite cluttered. But we did it - We got three boys and all their clothes into a room that is roughly 11x11. Miracle.
So for now, Ethan is still in the crib. It transitions into a toddler bed, so that's our next step. He napped in a real bed on vacation last week, so we'll probably start that process soon. Yes, there is one empty picture frame above his bed. I still do have a few chores left to do. ;-)

We kept the transportation theme that we've had in our Boy room all along, so many things (art work, sheets, lamp, rug, accent pillows, etc.) were able to roll-over. The biggest additions are both of the dressers. The three-drawer platform dresser - which fits ever so snugly under the lofted bed - holds Brennan's clothes.
For now, we still have the changing table in there for Ethan too. I only have one changing pad though, so we'll be taking that out soon. We think the best option is to also take out the rocking chair (even though Ethan still really loves to get rocked and sung to before nap and bed), and then we'll put a bench that doubles as storage in the spot the changing table is currently in. You probably can also see that Collin and Brennan also both have a fan clipped to their beds. That room gets mighty toasty at night with all that body heat, but the top bunk is too close to the ceiling light to put in a fan. Yes, this room is truly more about function than style. And don't miss all their artwork/collections on the bulletin board. Yes, moms don't always win the decorating battle.
The dresser at the foot of the bunk bed has Collin's and Ethan's clothes in it. At first, we also had a ladder mixed in here, but Collin liked to take it off at night so that the "ladder monster" didn't come up. I was also constantly getting Ethan down from playing up there, so now Collin does some gymnastic-maneuvering each morning and night to get up and down, and we saved the space too! The ladder is in storage in the basement.
And it wouldn't be Collin's room if I didn't have to buy black-out curtains. That boy loves the dark! Ethan has been sleeping better since we got them hung too, so I guess it is better this way anyway.

And there you have it - all four kids, all on one floor, in just two bedrooms. Go us! Now we have a dedicated guest room and bathroom in the basement all prepared for my parents' baby help and any others who wish to stop by for a night... or a week!

August!

How is it August already?! Here's what we each have been up to.

RYAN
Ryan traveled (2 business trips and his family wedding) all of June, so it was nice to have him around again in July. This week he is gone again, but this time he took all three boys alone to his family reunion (since I'm too pregnant now to travel). He still gets up every day between 5:30-6am to workout, and he does 50 push ups and a one-minute plank every night before bed. He and I are actually nearing the same weight, since he keeps going down and I keep going up. He's the skinniest he's ever been and happier than I've ever seen him. He was released in July from being a Primary teacher and is now the second counselor in the Sunday School presidency. Talk about easy street. He loves his job and is usually only gone 8am-5:30pm. Me likey.

LINDSEY
I am 37 weeks pregnant now. I'm hot and tired. My varicose veins seem to be under control though. The baby was breech at my 28-week ultrasound, and each appointment thereafter the midwives confirmed she was still head up. I was in a panic about the version procedure to turn her, but since my doctors' office wouldn't let me attempt a natural breech delivery, I figured it was better than a forced scheduled c-section at 39 weeks. It was my ultimate birthing nightmare. And then the ultrasound at 35 weeks confirmed she had indeed turned, and now all is right in my world again. :-)

This week I have been all alone while the boys have all been with Ryan. They've been in Vancouver, WA with his immediate family until today, and now they are at a beach house on the Oregon coast with his aunts, uncles, cousins and their kids, and grandmother. I'm sad to be missing it all, but I've enjoyed my week too. Let's see: visiting teaching, oil change, manicure, hair cut, my baby shower (at Panera tonight), school supply shopping, school clothes shopping, massage (tomorrow). I could get used to this!

COLLIN
Collin has decided that being six is the hardest year of life. You have to learn to read, play the piano, learn to swim, ride a two-wheeler, etc. Needless to say, we have taken a break from formal swim lessons and piano. He still has to practice piano every morning, and I still challenge him to try new things at the pool, but that's abut it.

As far as 2-wheeler bike lessons - We forced him to try it again last Saturday night (after not touching his bike since his birthday last Dec), and 15 minutes later he was cruising up and down the street. Not a single crash. The only thing he hadn't mastered that night was starting, which he figured out all by himself on the following Monday. Now he's a little speed demon cruising up and down the street. He can't wait to have a choice between riding his scooter or his bike to school each morning in a few weeks.

I really have tried to provide stuff for him to do this summer to keep him away from screens and boredom. We go to a park or the pool almost every day. We even ventured down to Denver to go to the Children's Museum (with my brother's help, of course). We also went to Chuck E. Cheese in the rain once. Ryan took him camping once, and he's been on lots of hikes (3?) and geo-caching ventures (2) too.

He'll be a lot happier when schools starts.

BRENNAN
Brennan would choose to sit in front of a screen in his jammies all day, every day if I would let him. He fights his chore list every day, and it is all I can do to get him dressed and to have shoes on.

Unlike Collin, he is much happier with the summer schedule, since he gets to hang with Collin all day and he doesn't have to be anywhere on time.

The big news about Brennan is that he is finally totally potty-trained. (Yes, I know he's 4-1/2.) My parents - who are now home from their two-year mission to the Philippines! - offered to take him and Collin to Utah to see his cousins for the weekend a few weeks ago. I told him he couldn't go because big kids who go on trips without their parents have to be potty-trained. Though he didn't quite have it down in time for the grandparent trip, he figured it out, and now he's a champ! Hooray!

ETHAN
Ethan started his language explosion the first week of July while my brother and sister were visiting. In one day he said three new words, and it hasn't really slowed down since. He's finally parroting words from us, but also saying things on his own too. Hallelujah. He is the king of mimicking his brothers which is both adorable and difficult. He is quite the wrestler. He still sucks on the corner of his blanket (sick!) to soothe himself and to go to sleep. He now shares his room with... wait for it... BOTH his brothers. That's right: I have all three boys in one room now. It's been a month now, and it has been going rather well. I'm proud of them.

KATELYN
Yes, that's her name... I think. We've gone round and round between Aspen and Katelyn/Katelin, but I think we have concluded it is Katelyn. We'll call her Kate. She's due in 3 weeks - the Friday at the end of the first week of school for Collin and exactly one week before Brennan's first week of preschool. It's a busy time, but I always like to have babies when things are crazy. Ok, not really, but that's what always happens.

My mom and dad are going to come on the 23rd, and hopefully they won't get sick of us before she decides to show up. They for sure need to leave by Sept 15th.

And then I'll be on my own with FOUR kids. Yikes!
