Cabo Morello Reunion

As soon as school was out, Ryan rushed home from Japan, and we were off to Cabo, Mexico to celebrate Grandpa & Grandma Morello's 50th wedding anniversary with a family reunion.
When we were starting to plan a reunion last summer, my mom said it had to be all-inclusive. No one was allowed to cook or clean-up. We looked at hiring a state-side chef, but we ended up at Grand Fiesta Americana in Cabo, Mexico.

We all enjoyed the unlimited food, snacks, and drinks. Gelato, pina coladas, burgers, fries, sushi... HEAVEN for growing kids.

We also enjoyed a bunch of swimming, chatting, lounging, and iguana watching.

I, of course, enjoyed time reading and listening to the crashing waves. The beach in Cabo is all giant boulders, so the noise was absolutely incredible. The water was all the perfect shades of blue and turquoise, following up contrasting by white caps. It wasn't a beach for swimming and the "sand" was gravel that hurt your bare feet, but the colors and sounds made up for that.

It was so fun to hang out with all my siblings and their kids. We live from coast to coast, so we really don't see each other much. Here's Rob's youngest Christopher getting a ride in the elevator on Uncle Ryan's shoulders, while gently tapping his head into the ceiling. What a cutie!
The first day the boys all went deep-sea fishing. They barely caught anything and most of them were violently sea-sick, but they certainly made a lot of memories!

The girls enjoyed time together too. One evening we all decorated trucker hats with beachy patches.

Another day a group of us went out on a boat to snorkel and paddle. There wasn't much to see, but Cancun and Kauai are seriously the best, so I need to stop expecting anything as good as those. We got to see the famous arch as well.

Again, we really enjoyed all the great families dinners and regular gelato trips!

One evening, we gathered together for a little trivia game Rachel put together. I helped her compile information for the game, so naturally I did quite well, haha. It was fun to look at old pictures and chat about places Mom and Dad have lived and vacationed.
Collin & Brennan enjoyed a fair amount of poolside ping pong as well.

I'm so grateful these two have each other. I tried to get them to spend more time with Janice and Julian, but they really are two-peas-in-a-pod, reading each other's minds and thinking in unison.

Katelyn had a particularly fabulous time getting to hang out with girl cousins. She gets along with Kim's girls so well! Her and Brianna were inseparable. She also swam with dolphins with Tressia one day.

Our last night we gathered for a family photo. Julian set up his camera on the sand, and Ryan flew his drone above. What a beautiful group!

Katelyn loved these yellow flowers on the grounds, so we got a couple pictures of her with them in her cute dress as well.

So long, Cabo! You are beautiful.

Soccer

Lots and lots and lots of soccer! A mom of another player on Katelyn's team has a fancy camera and takes lots of photos, and the soccer club has used this one of Katelyn a couple times in promotions.

The rest of the photos are just ones she shared. She is still predominantly playing center defender, but when their team is ahead, her coach sometimes put her on offense, so she got to score a couple goals this season too.
This Spring brought her first opportunity to try out for a Select team, and she made the highest team for her age group. I am so proud of her! She works so hard, especially when it is so hot, and she is so reliable to her team mates.

The select team will hold most of its games north of Austin, with travel times about 2 hours each way. The season starts the first week of August.

She really is so fun to watch so, hopefully all that time behind the wheel will be worth it.

Mother's Day weekend she had a tournament here in San Antonio. They won one and lost another on Saturday. We heard from her team mates that they tied another on Sunday, so they took 3rd place. Not bad!

Robotics

Collin & Brennan headed to Space City (outside Houston) for a second Robotics tournament at the end of March. Things went a little better there, and they got to stay in a team hotel and miss some school, so that was fun.

Texas SandFest

We headed to Port Aransas the last weekend in April for my favorite event - SandFest! Sand sculptors from all over the world come for the weekend to tell story through sand, and then it all gets bulldozed Sunday afternoon! We stayed in a great hotel super close by and had a perfect time.

And it wouldn't be a trip to the coast if we didn't also build our own castle, walk the jetty, fly the stunt kite, and enjoy some pool and hot tub time. Perfect family get-away!

GT Showcase

The end of April was also the GT Showcase. Ryan was out of town, but it was an all-hands-on-deck event, with Ethan & Katelyn in my class, and me as the hosting teacher.

Katelyn stayed after school and helped with set-up and decorating, but then her friend's mom took her to soccer. Collin brought Ethan & Brennan towards the end, and then they were on clean up and tear down. I was so proud of them for pitching in, and my admin noticed how much help they were too. I was sad Ryan was gone and couldn't celebrating all my kiddos' hard work though.

The theme for the older kids was Innovation Celebration. Katelyn created Marshmallows Delights, and Ethan designed a washer/dryer combo unit.

After studying traditions and cultural all year, the little kids created a holiday.

It was a fun night, and the parents seemed pleased with the event.

Choir at the Spurs Game

Katelyn joined the school choir this year. They sang at a Spurs game over Spring Break.

They also had an end-of-year concert that Ryan was out of town for.

Car Wrecks

I had a cursed week in April. I picked up another teacher because her car was in the shop, and on the way to school, a deer ran out in front of me. If didn't do much damage, but in the end, the Expedition was in the shop for 3 weeks getting a new bumper and radiator.

While it was in the shop, I drove Ryan's car because I didn't like the way the rental car smelled. The very first day I had his car, I was rear-ended by one of my student's mom's at a stop sign on the way to soccer practice with Katelyn's friend in the car. It also didn't do much damage, but the car was in the shop 3 weeks again while we got a new bumper and spoiler. I didn't want to be difficult, so we ended up paying out of pocket for the rental car that time around too, but we managed to only need a rental one of the 3 weeks because Ryan was gone so much in May.

Sigh. No more accidents!

Easter

I bought all these cute purple outfits for Easter, so I thought I'd put that memory here.

Mother's Day

I did not buy cute outfits for Mother's Day, but I'll drop that memory here too.

4th grade at The Alamo

I took a day off school to go with Katelyn to the Alamo and San Jose Mission. It was SOOOO hot that day, but we survived. They've totally remodeled the Alamo since I was teaching 4th grade, so it was fun to get a tour.

Field Day

Another hot day - Field Day! I had to be outside in the heat all day as a Specials teacher, and it was rough to say the least. I ended up with a mega-migraine that night and ended up in bed before 7pm. Sigh. And I guess the only pic I took that day was of Katelyn's cute hair, haha.

5th Grade Party & Graduation

Our elementary school throws a huge bash for graduating 5th graders, and since Ethan's group never got to do a Kindergarten Graduation Party (COVID), they really out-did themselves this year.

The day after the party was his graduation ceremony. You guessed it - Ryan was out of town. (I think Japan this time?) I checked Katelyn out of class, and she came to cheer and listen to them sing. It was cute.

Last Day of School

And then the year was all wrapped up! I had to work a full-day on the last day, so I found friends and had Collin do some pickups so the kids still didn't have to ride the bus home. They had pool parties and a great time! I also had to work the next day, but it was really just a breakfast and cleaning day, and I was able to leave by 1 pm.

My 7th year of teaching, all wrapped up. Collin is going to be a junior, Brennan is going to be a freshman, Ethan will be a 6th grader, and Katelyn will be a 5th grader. Next year at this time, I'll be the only one in the family still left behind in elementary school. I don't even want to think about it. ;-(
